The WI Diamond Jubilee Cookbook

WI Diamond Jubilee Cookbook

When I told my Nan about this project on my last visit to the Midlands she rummaged around in her cupboard to produce the WI Diamond Jubilee Cookbook for me.

Released in 1975 it is a compendium of recipes handpicked by Bee Nilson from 35 cookery books all of which had been compiled by members of the WI. It was a celebration not necessarily of the ‘best’ recipes, but of those which best catalogued the variety of tastes within members and also those recipes which were synonymous with particular areas. Southern WI federations could now find themselves rustling up Hot Durham Parkin or Welsh Bara Brith, and vice versa.

For me this book excites me even further for our project. I cannot wait to discover a new breed of WI recipe hailing from each part of the UK. So much has happened socially within the country let alone the organisation in the last 40 years, that I am convinced we can discover not only a new menu but a new cross-section of members profiling what the WI stands for today.

Aswell as receiving the book with great pleasure, I also found enclosed a crocheted doily for which my Nan had won first prize at her local WI at roughly the same period as the book was released. I’m hoping that is a lucky charm for the success of our project!

(In a seasonal gesture I have photographed the recipe for Christmas Cake which I may have a dabble with if I haven’t left it too late)
