Hatching foodie dreams

breadLouise and I have good appetites. When we’re not cooking up creations in our South East London kitchens, we’re usually planning our next meal or bake – or at least talking about it. I’m planning another foray into the world of preserve making. Chiming in with daffodils, hot cross buns and a long, lazy bank holiday weekend, I’m hoping to perfect my recipe for lemon curd using gluts of freshly-laid hens eggs which are delivered to my (pretty rural) office every day. These moss-speckled shells look so very perfect I can hardly bear to crack them into a pan of sugar, butter, zest and juice – yet I know they’ll add to the most fantastic tasting lemony spread. Here they are with their duck egg sisters, in fetching shades of pink and blue.

It doesn’t come as much of a surprise to read that collecting and cooking your own fresh eggs is a foodie experience up there with the best of them. Kenwood, the creators of food-mixer wizardry, have developed the ‘Definitive Foodie Bucket List’; an exhaustive and tantalising set of tick boxes drummed up the likes of Giles Coren, William Sitwell and GBBO finalist Miranda Gore Browne. Their foodie fantasies, featuring top restaurants, comfort puddings and foraging adventures by the sea, were whittled down to an edited 50 which you can read here.

While dining at L’Enclume and Racine are still on my hit list (and are likely to stay for some time), it was heartening to see a few home classics in there which I can tick off in abandon. Making soup (never fails to satisfy), kneading and baking your own bread (must do this more) and taking afternoon tea at Betty’s in Harrogate, one of my favourite places to stop for coffee and a plump fruit Rascal. When in Yorkshire.

I’m seconding takeaway fish and chips, drenched in vinegar, which never taste better than from Whitby’s The Magpie as hungry seagulls swoop low in their bid for your chips. And I’m ticking a few boxes off for Louise in the process. In my opinion, she has homemade ice-cream (coming in at no 38) and a ‘Perfectly timed Sunday roast’ down to a T.

What are your foodie favourites from the bucket list? We’d love to know!
